Episode Summary

Tensho’in [Miyazaki Aoi] receives a letter from Naogoro [Eita] that details the truth behind the Namamugi Incident and begins to insist that both the Satsuma clan and the shogunate should apologize to the British.

In Kyoto, the Choshu clan, radical advocators of revering the Emperor and expelling the foreigners, has taken control of the political leadership from the Satsuma clan. Both Shimazu Hisamitsu [Yamaguchi Yuichiro] and Iwakura Tomomi [Kataoka Tsurutaro] find themselves overthrown.

At this time, an Imperial messenger comes to see Shogun Iemochi [Matsuda Shota] and request that he go to Kyoto to carry out the expulsion of all foreigners. Iemochi discusses this with Tensho’in and decides to go to Kyoto so he could personally tell the Emperor that it would create difficulties for the country if the foreigners are expelled. On the other hand, Kazunomiya [Horikita Maki] is opposed to his trip because she is worried for his health.
As this is happening, Sakamoto Ryoma [Tamaki Hiroshi] turns up at Katsu Rintaro’s [Kitaoji Kin’ya] place. Ryoma had visited Katsu with the intention of killing him but Katsu’s enlightened thinking leaves a deep impression on Ryoma. Instead of murdering Katsu, Ryoma asks to become his disciple.

Meanwhile in Satsuma, Naogoro is preparing for congratulatory banquet in celebration of his promotion to chief retainer. His father, Kimotsuki Kaneyoshi [Enoki Takaaki], is greatly pleased with his son’s eminence.

Edo Castle is getting ready for Iemochi’s trip to Kyoto but a confrontation occurs between Tensho’in and Katsu over whether Iemochi should go by land or by sea. In addition to this, Kazunomiya harbors a strong hostility towards Tensho’in when she finds out that she had backed Iemochi’s decision to go to Kyoto.
